The Trail Retirees Curling Club held its annual playoff for the club championship last week.

In the Section 1 versus Section 3 winners game it was team Serge Pasquali that got off to a commanding lead.

In the first end Serge’s last shot was over curling, until it rubbed a guard that put it back on course to hit and stick for three.

By the third end Pasquali was up 5-0 over team Cal McKerracher. The McKerracher side fought back with one in the fourth and a steal of two in the fifth.

Serge made a draw to the tee line and a bite of the button to just outcount a McKerracher rock in the sixth. In the seventh McKerracher made a perfect draw to the pin and, after a measure, was awarded two. In the eighth it was Pasquali’s second, Jack Hammom that made a chip off his own rock and roll buried in the four foot. That turned out to be the rock that sealed a win for team Pasquali.

In the 2 vs 4 game it was team Murray Walsh against Alvin Caron, but it was Caron that struck first.

Stan Trozzo, for team Caron, with his last rock over curling, chipped off a guard and made the takeout. Jim Harold, for team Murray Walsh, overcurled his final shot and was not so lucky. He raised a Caron rock in for two.

The turning point in the game came in the fifth end. With Walsh down by one and Caron with hammer, it was Walsh sitting four buried on Caron’s last shot. With an ‘in off’ the only way to cut Walsh down Caron lined it up. The shot over curled and just ticked the rock and slid to the back of the rings.

The Walsh team buoyed by a score of four, then curled almost 100 per cent, stealing in the sixth and seventh ends and running team Caron out of rocks in the eighth.

Two days later, it was team Walsh shooting red rocks against team Serge Pasquali, shooting yellow rocks.

In the first end Brian Koshey made a double bump to the button on his first, and draw down to it on his second for team Pasquali. With play all around the four foot, it came down to a measure and Walsh earned a single.

After an open end, Pasquali was left with a difficult shot for three but only managed a single. The front end for Walsh then took over and put pressure on team Pasquali, scoring two in the third, and stealing singles in the fourth and fifth.

In the sixth, Pasquali had a long angle raise that overcurled and only make a single.

In the seventh, Pasquali on his last shot made a great raise to the four foot, but Walsh with hammer made an even better raise for one.

With the score 6-2 for Walsh in the eighth it was a matter or running Pasquali out of rocks for the win.
