Kimberley Dynamiters blast Nitehawks, take Games 1 and 2

Dynamiters beat Beaver Valley 4-2 and 5-1 to take 2-0 lead in Kootenay Conference final

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks dropped their first two matches of the Kootenay Conference final to the Kimberley Dynamiters on the weekend.

The Dynamiters skated to a 5-1 win on Saturday after taking a close 4-2 battle on Friday in Kimberley.

Kimberley dominated the opening period of Game 2, scoring three times while outshooting B.V. 12-2.

The Nitehawks rallied in the final 40, with Spencer Dixon-Reusz scoring at 12:01 of the second period to make it 3-1. But the home team answered with two more goals in the third despite being outshot 16-6 for the 5-1 final.

Kimberley had five different scorers contributing including Kade Leskosky, Jayden Kostiuk, Christian Mealey, Ethan Bloomquist, and Tyler Lindal.

The Hawks outshot Kimberley 32-25 and went 0-for-3 on the power play, and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

In Friday’s Game 1, Leskosky opened the scoring for the Dynos 7:20 into the first period.

Nitehawks forward Cooper Ross tallied his second of the playoff on the power play to tie it at 18:34 of the second period.

But a goal from Campbell McLean 19 seconds later and another from Tristan Weill 54 seconds after that gave the Dynamiters a 3-1 lead.

Ross, a Montrose product, brought B.V. within one on a set up from Timothy Josza and Lucas Gartner at 10:48 but Justin Sommer added an insurance marker with 1:44 left in the middle frame.

The teams exchanged chances in the third but Kimberley held on for the 4-2 victory.

The Dynamiters outshot B.V. 32-30. B.V. was 1-for-6 on the power play, and the Dynos 0-for-4.

Games 3 and 4 will go at the Beaver Valley Arena in Fruitvale on Tuesday and Wednesday (March 21-22) with the puck drop at 7 p.m.
