The Special Olympic BC-Trail Ski Team was in good company at the 2023 SOBC Winter Games in Kamloops last month.

The Red Mountain sponsored ski team, consists of Tim McTeer, Scott Simister and Stuart Hawton, and thanks to the connections of coach Darrell Fye, they were introduced to former Rosslander and Olympic downhill champion Nancy Greene Raine at Sun Peaks Resort.

Greene has had an illustrious career. Starting in Rossland on Red, she went on to win multiple Canadian and US championships, Olympic downhill gold and silver medals, is a two-time World Cup downhill champion, former Senator, and Canada’s female athlete of the 20th Century, in addition to multiple other awards and honours.

Greene is the director of skiing at Sun Peaks Resort and skis almost every day. She and her husband Al built Nancy Greene’s Cahilty Lodge, where they make their home. Dedicated to the promotion of her sport for more than 30 years, the Nancy Greene Ski League has been an important entry-level race program for young children.

The meeting inspired local athletes, as McTeer raced to gold in the Intermediate Giant Slalom, Simister captured bronze in the Advanced Slalom, and Hawton came in fourth in the Intermediate GS.

The SOBC ski team and volunteer coaches Darrell Frye and Kurt Kucher send out a big thank you to Red Mountain for all its support and sponsorship.
