The REC Department is excited about bringing Amber Oosthuyzen’s “Redefining Beauty” course to Rossland! Amber is a local teen from Trail who has developed a course for girls and young women that helps them to channel their self-worth, develop healthy relationships and teaches them to set the bar high. This year’s program focuses on mental and physical health and stripping away an obsession about body and image. The participants figure out what makes them tick through discussions and activities while enjoying the support of the group.
The course will be held on Saturday, May 28 from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Miners’ Hall. The course is designed for girls ages 13 – 18, but girls who are turning 13 this year are invited to attend. The fee for the course is $20 and includes a healthy lunch. This workshop is a great opportunity for any young woman in Rossland — if you have a daughter, granddaughter or niece, consider registering them for this important course.
Sr. Men’s Basketball at RSS started this week on Mondays between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. The program is open to all men, ages 35+ who want to play basketball and have some fun. Please bring a water bottle and a clean pair of indoor running shoes.
The Rossland Pool opens soon and is currently accepting applications from qualified instructors and lifeguards. If you are currently working towards full certification, please drop off your resume for consideration. There are casual and junior guard positions that can be filled by local youth who are still 16 and/or not finished their instruction certifications. Students and local youth are given priority in the hiring process — if you’re interested in working at the Rossland Pool — don’t delay! The annual Trash to Treasure event is on Saturday April 23 this year. In partnership with the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, The Regional District of Central Kootenay promotes Trash to Treasure as an event that focuses on REUSE! This event is held in April to celebrate Earth Day and in October to support Waste Reduction Week. What is Trash to Treasure? T2T Day is a zero-waste focused event, which provides residents with an opportunity to give away unwanted, but useful, household items to those who may find value in them. Participating in T2T Day is easy and encourages re-use while diverting waste from the region’s landfills. After all, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure!”
Interested in participating? On the morning of April 23, gather reusable, gently-used, unwanted household items (e.g. books, bicycles, clothing, toys, furniture, etc.) and place them on your property or in your driveway. To make sure others know you are participating in T2T make sure to post a sign in a highly visible location near your reusable items. Make your own T2T signs or print one from the RDCK website. Then, let the treasure hunting begin! Not only can residents participate by giving away unwanted items for reuse they can also be treasure hunters looking for REUSABLE items throughout the community. By participating in T2T, residents can divert reusable items from the landfill by REUSING them. At 4 p.m., remove all leftover items from your property. If you have anything left over, contact your local charity to see if they will accept your unwanted left-over items. Several classes have cancelled this week due to low registration. The Cartooning for Teens, Music & Movement Class and Medieval Art have all cancelled. If you want to register for a program, don’t wait too long!
Yoga at the Annex will be ending at the end of April as our instructor, Norma, will be leaving Rossland. The Recreation Department will be sad to see Norma leave and wish her the best on her next adventure!
Revolution Cycle is offering a kids bike maintenance class on Wednesday, May 18 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and an adult class on Tuesday April 19 and Wednesday May 11.
