H.I. Ed Huitema

June 9, 1926 - October 3, 2017

HUITEMA, H.I. (ED) passed away peacefully at Poplar Ridge Care Facility on October 3, 2017. Ed was born in Rosser, Manitoba on June 9, 1926.

He was the eldest son of Ed and Ann Huitema. He was predeceased by his parents, his partner Annie Healy, brother Willy and nephew Ben Lindley.

He is survived by his daughter Ann (Jim) Drake, grandchildren Dallas (Amy) Drake, Kim (Gary Johnston) Drake. His great-grandchildren Jakson, Delaney, Darby and Dysen Drake and Karsten and Ethan Jang. Brothers George of Nesbitt, Ma, Theo of Christina Lake and sister Lucy Ackles of Christina Lake and many nieces and nephews.

After dad and his family moved to Rossland from Manitoba, he enlisted in the army. After WWll he started to work for CM&S (Teck) where he worked until his retirement in 1991.

Dad was an avid member of the Local 480 union, something that he enjoyed being part of. He was also a member of the Rossland Legion Br.14 for 55 years.

In his younger years he enjoyed playing hockey, curling, fishing & spending time at Christina Lake where he had many different boats, one that he built, and was always trying to see how many water skiers he could pull up at once. Made it to 12. He and Annie liked to go camping in their motorhome and traveling around the West Kootenay.

His greatest joy was his grandchildren, he was so proud of their accomplishments. When they were young, at Christmas time he would put on his red and white suit and white beard and travel around the neighbourhood giving out candy canes to all the kids.

The family would like to thank Dr. Scully for his care over the years. The nurses and staff at Poplar Ridge for your care and kindness during a very difficult time and to Home Support for his care when he was at home. Also, his neighbours that kept a close eye on him.

Dad requested that there be no funeral.

The family would like to invite family and friends to join them at the Rossland Legion on Saturday, October 14 from 3:30-4:30 to have a toast to Dad.

As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made in Ed's name to the Rossland Legion Poppy Fund.

You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family's online register at www.myalternatives.ca.

Here's hoping God is a union man!
