April 22, 1954 - September 28, 2020
It is with profound sadness that the family of Grant Edward Smith announces his passing on Monday, September 28, 2020 at the age of 66 years after a courageous battle with cancer.
Grant was born in Pembroke, ON on April 22nd, 1954. He graduated from Victoria Park high school in Toronto before moving to the West Kootenay region at the age of 19. His early career involved many logging and construction jobs. He worked at Red Mountain for more than 10 years before becoming a millwright at age 36 to better support his young family. He went on to work on many hydro-dams throughout the region, ending his career at Fortis BC at the age of 55.
Grant was a loving family man whose family saw him as a hero and role model for living life as though everyone is your friend. With his generous nature and light-hearted sense of humour, Grant was gregarious and made friends easily. He remembered people, places, and things with a sharp wit, held no ill- will to any, and was always there to lend a tool and helping hands.
In winters, he could be seen riding around on his John Deere tractor blowing snow around the neighborhood. Ever the sportsman, Grant loved his leisure time; golfing and fishing in the summer, hunting in the autumn, and skiing in the winter. Amongst these hobbies, skiing was his foremost passion. He worked as a representative for Salomon, coached and worked at Red Mountain, and was president of Red Mtn. Racers. He never quit volunteering for the organization and was instrumental in preparing for ski races until 2018.
Grant will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 39 years, Mary, his children, Lauren and Nick, and his sisters Sue and Candace. Grant will also be fondly remembered by many sister and brother in laws, nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors to the property he lived on for over 40 years. He was predeceased by his mother, Dolly, father, Willis, and brother, Cecil.
Funeral services will be delayed until winter, a group ski perhaps?, where ashes will be scattered in the mountains he loved. Andreas Schmitz of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation ServicesTM has been entrusted with arrangements.
Those who so desire, can make memorial donations in the name of Grant to the Red Mountain Racers or the non-profit Braille Mountain Initiative.
