WHY Resources held a meeting with the City of Rossland, provincial ministries, and concerned citizens on May 2.

As part of its consultation process, West High Yield (WHY) Resources met with representatives from the City of Rossland and other groups on May 3 to discuss the future development of the Record Ridge Industrial Mineral Mine Project.

The city’s manager of planning and development, Stacy Lightbourne, attended the meeting, along with representatives from WHY and their consultants, the provinces Ministry of Transportation MOTI, Forests, Lands and Natural Resources (FLNRO), the environment (ENV), and mines (EMLI), as well as the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB), and public representation from Sheep Creek and Rossland.

“The goal of the meeting was to finish the application screening before it continues onto the technical review for the updated application,” said Lightbourne. “There were still many issues raised with the application from the variety of ministries so it has not been accepted as a complete application yet.”

In February, WHY Resources submitted its amended Joint Mines Act/Environmental Management Act Permit Application to the BC Ministry of Mines for the development and operation of its Record Ridge mine near Rossland.

The mining exploration and development company’s primary objective is to develop its Record Ridge magnesium, silica, and nickel deposit using green processing techniques to minimize waste and CO2 emissions.

“There was some discussion around public engagement,” said Lightbourne. “MOE are requiring it along with city and RDKB. The applicant said they are planning some public engagement but offered no further details on it.”

Lightbourne indicated that the Ministry also contacted Colville Confederated Tribes regarding indigenous engagement on the project.
