The night of St. Patrick’s Day (March 17), a frontline RCMP officer was conducting a routine patrol in Rossland when he allegedly observed the driver of a Ford pickup truck drift around a corner from Highway 3B onto Columbia Avenue.

The officer detained the driver, a 30-year old Rossland man, and his truck roadside.

The officer reported he made observations that led him to believe the man’s ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. As part of the roadside investigation, police say the man provided a breath sample that resulted in a fail.

The driver was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and his truck is in impound for up to 30 days.

The following night, a frontline Trail RCMP officer allegedly observed the driver of a Jeep Cherokee driving erratically along the 2200 block of Columbia Avenue, in Rossland. The officer detained the driver, a 35-year old Rossland woman, and her vehicle roadside.

The officer says he made observations that led him to believe the woman’s ability to drive was impaired by alcohol. As part of the roadside investigation, police report that the woman failed a breathalyzer. Her “fail” was after she made 16 attempts to provide a breath sample and was verbally abusive toward the officer, according to the police report.

The woman was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and her vehicle is in impound for up to 30 days.

Road safety

The Trail and Greater District RCMP have conducted two road safety check stops so far this month.

“Trail RCMP has recently purchased new flashlights and shoulder lights for its officers to help them conduct checks safely,” Sgt. Mike Wicentowich advises. “As winter turns to spring, Trail RCMP anticipates more traffic and outdoor social activities.”

Please make sure to plan on a sober ride home before you head out with family and friends, he adds.

“We would also like to thank the BC Highway Patrol for all of their efforts and enforcement recently. Together, we are keeping our roads and highway safer for everyone.”
