The parish of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church is sending out a big thank you to a local business that helped secure their downtown Trail premises with new fireproof doors after a stairwell fire destroyed the old door last summer.

The church has installed new fireproof doors, thanks to a generous donation of $2,500 from Integrity Subaru in Trail.

“Last summer we had a serious fire at the church that destroyed an entrance,” explains lay leader J. Friesen, St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. “A sponsor generously donated an amount that allowed us to have the entrance replaced.”

Three members of Station 374 Trail responded to a fire alarm that went off in St. Andrew’s Anglican Church shortly after 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 26.

“Upon arrival, crews discovered smoke coming from the back stairwell,” Captain Grant Tyson reported that morning.

Fortunately the church’s fire alarm was activated as smoke had filled the building.

“Early detection and quick response time saved this building from serious damage,” Tyson said.

While all was cleaned up from the church’s close call with the stairwell fire by Sunday, the lingering smoky odour presented the parish with a perfect opportunity to hold morning service in the fresh air.

“So good to be in the garden,” Anglican church member Jennifer Sirges shared following Sunday service. “We have found positives from our early morning near-miss, and this is one of them.”
