The City of Trail will begin digging out in earnest Friday night by ramping up snow removal operations.

Over the weekend, trucks and loaders cleared snow from downtown and Rossland Avenue during the night.

The focus was West Trail on Monday. Today, crews will be removing snow the 1400 and 1500 blocks of Second Avenue in East Trail, then mid-week the loaders will be working on clearing out Binns Street. Thursday the city will be back on Second Avenue, blocks 1100 to 1300, then Friday they’ll move to Nelson Avenue and Dockerill Street.

Greater Trail area saw more than 20 centimeters of snow not once but twice in the last 10 days.

According to the city’s snow plowing priorities, municipal workers have 76 kilometers (152 lane kilometers) of roads to maintain throughout Trail and has 14 pieces of equipment including loaders, sand spreaders, snow plows, and a grader.

From mid-November to March, the city has at least one employee on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The number of employees involved in snow removal is dependent on the amount and duration of snowfall.

Seniors 65 and over looking for snow shoveling assistance can call the Trail Family and Individual Resource (FAIR) Centre Society at 250.364.2326 ext. 233.

Costs are on a sliding scale according to income with subsidies for eligible low income seniors.

Note that snow clearing priorities are dependent upon weather conditions.

Public Safety Canada advises commuters to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.

DriveBC also warns of high avalanche risk and highway closures along sections of highways 1, 3, 12, 16, 31 and 99.

Sections of highways 1 and 3 have been closed since Thursday due to the risk and large avalanche deposits on the highway.
