Teck hosting meeting on fence and trails

Teck Metals Ltd. has invited "all trail users and interested parties" to attend a meeting at the Prestige on Sunday, from 3 to 5 p.m., to discuss the fence they are installing and other safety concerns surrounding the old mining properties on the south slope of Red Mountain.

A "geotechnical and human health assessment" ordered by Teck in 2006 resulted in the closure of an area on the southern slope of Red Mountain due to safety risks from historical mining operations, some of many in the Rossland area for which Teck Trail Operations is responsible.

To help ensure public safety on these already-closed lands, Teck will construct a perimeter fence this summer, but the company also recognizes "the value to the community these trail systems provide."

Consequently, "Teck has partnered with the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society to make some of these lands available for non-motorized recreational use on designated trails," the company reports.

A public meeting has been arranged on June 26 to address any concerns. For more information, contact Catherine Adair, the community engagement co-ordinator for Teck at 364-4878.
