Since 1923, and on the heels of Walt Disney’s 100th anniversary, people have enjoyed timeless stories told through animation.

Animation has grown from short films into feature-length movies combining artistry with storytelling and technology. Today, students from all different creative walks can find employment and excitement in the field of animation.

Caileigh Miller is a senior student at Seven Summits Centre for Learning who is finding her passion in animation.

“The art and science of animation fascinate me, and although it is very time-consuming, I love every minute of the creative process,” says Miller. “I hope one day to work in this fast-paced industry and contribute my creativity to animation.”

Animation is a means of storytelling through art and science using many artists and technologists working together. New tools and techniques are shaping the future of animated storytelling, but only with the curiosity and creativity of trained employees working behind the scenes.

Careers in animation are constantly evolving to grow new talent and techniques.

“I have made a total of five stop-motion videos to get a start in animation. I have a special interest in puppet-style animation like Coraline and Fantastic Mr. Fox, as they show how detailed the process is for making these movies.”

Why animated video?

“Content is all about being seen. An advertisement or message is only as good as the execution for people to listen and act. More and more messages are using video as a cost-effective way to convey key points and use a visual medium. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, and people just aren’t likely to read a thousand words,” says Miller.

There are many benefits to using animated video, so the key is to find software that supports the wildest ideas of the imagination to get the message out. Still photos or the written word are limited compared to the visual intrigue of video animation.

“Animation provides content, context, characters, tone, and interest around ideas from obvious to abstract,” says Miller. “With the right technological support, animation can capture hard-to-represent ideas without constraint.

“Who doesn’t like watching a quick story? It is interesting and psychologically appealing, and for marketers, it is cost-effective,” says Miller. “Animation is a dynamic and versatile medium that, when used, will elevate the storytelling message to a new level.”
