There are more people 14 years old and under in Rossland than there are people over 65.

Census data released by Statistics Canada on Wednesday shows that 695, or 18.6 per cent, of Rosslanders are 14 years old or younger, while 480 or 12.9 per cent, are 65 years old or older.

The rest of Rossland residents 2,555 or 68.5 per cent are somewhere between the two, and the average age in Rossland is 40.

Rossland bucks the provincial trend.

Of B.C. residents, 18.3 per cent are 65 or over and 14.9 per cent are 14 years old or younger. The average age of B.C.’s population is 42.3.

Gender (limited to male and female) was also included in the release, and Rossland has a slightly higher male population at 51.7 per cent.

More dwellings, smaller household sizes

The number of total occupied private dwellings in Rossland increased 8.1 per cent between 2011 and 2016, up to 1,590.

The number of persons in private dwellings also increased, up 5.7 from 3,520 in 2011 to 3,720 in 2016.

But the average household size is down to 2.3 from 2.4 in 2011.

The number of single detached houses increased by 4.9 per cent from 1,235 in 2011 to 1,295 in 2016.

This was also counter to the provincial trend, where there is a shift from single-family dwellings to multi-family dwellings.

That being said, there were also five apartments in a building that has five or more storeys added to Rossland between 2011 and 2016 (up from zero), and a 45.8 per cent increase in apartments in buildings with five stories or less.
