Council reconsiders options, settles on an EV Mustang Mach-E Select AWD, similar to this one.

Rossland’s new bylaw officer, Jared Saxby, will soon be cruising the streets of the Golden City in style.

Council welcomed Saxby to his new position at their Aug. 9 meeting, and then approved the purchase of a new electric vehicle for the city.

Pending a delayed delivery, Rossland will add the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Select All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) to its fleet, for roughly $63,900, taxes included.

At a July 12 meeting, council reviewed the initial report on the purchase of a new EV vehicle and requested staff include estimates on 2WD EV vehicles as well.

A motion to buy the recommended Mustang was defeated in a 4-3 vote.

Council then approved leasing an electric vehicle in the short term and asked staff to reissue a request for proposals that includes two-wheel and four-wheel drive options.

Staff came back with proposals that included a 2021 Hyundai Kona 2WD for approximately $54,000, a 2021 Ford Mach E 2WD at almost $58,500, a Kia Niro 2WD at $61,600 and a Nissan Leaf 2WD quoted at close to $50,000.

An updated staff report said city operations still recommended “the Ford Mach E AWD due to Cargo Holding (largest area in the back for a XL dog crate), Service availability, and employee safety.”

The vehicle will be purchased locally at AM Ford, so its service, parts and labour warranty can all be addressed locally in Trail.

The city budgeted up to $87,000 for a new electric vehicle in its 2021 Budget.

It follows the city’s strategy to help mitigate its impact on the environment, and follows its 100 per cent renewables plan.

“The City of Rossland recognizes the importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the City of Rossland’s carbon footprint,” stated the city staff report.
