Police are treating the discovery of a body in Rossland as a homicide.

Thursday at approximately 11 a.m., the Trail and Greater District Detachment received a call regarding the discovery of a male body at a residence on Feeney Road just north of Rossland on Highway 3B.

Upon arrival police located the body of a deceased male inside the residence at that location.

A press release from the Southeast Southeast District Major Crime Unit said the death is being treated as a homicide.

The investigation is in the preliminary stages and the identity of the deceased is not being released pending notification of his next of kin.

The RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit with assistance from the Kootenay Boundary Regional General Investigation Section continue to investigate and ask that anyone with any information contact the Trail and Great District Detachment at 250-364-2566 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The report of a suspicious death came on the heels of the killing of three RCMP officers and the wounding of two others in Moncton on Wednesday evening.

Sgt. Darren Oelke, NCO of the Trail and Greater District Detachment, said the call Thursday morning had an obvious impact on the still shaken staff.

“Everyone came to work in a pretty somber mood that morning,” he explained.

“In any call of this nature your alert is heightened. And especially after an incident like in Moncton. It just reinforces the office safety aspect of our work.”

Oelke said he spoke about the Moncton incident with members on staff and reviewed and reinforced protocol in such instances.

“Our officers’ safety is definitely paramount,” he said.

Oekle added the public has also shown its compassion in light of the tragedy in New Brunswick.

“Someone left three white roses (in honour of the fallen members) at the steps of the detachment.”
