The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is getting word out about the official launch of its new interactive web map service.

After 15 years, the interactive web map has been modernized to encourage collaboration, informative decision making, and to align with the same interface already found on many other local government web maps.

The regional district encourages residents to explore the new mapping service before the existing web map is phased out in mid April.

Moreover the RDKB says the introduction of this updated mapping service is a significant milestone.

“Everything is now hosted in-house so our team has total control,” explains Donna Dean, RDKB manager of planning and development. “This allows them to provide timely updates and changes made to geospatial data will appear on the map in near real time,” she adds.

“It’s a much cleaner interface, which is easier to use and has all the functionality of the old system along with new features.”

Highlights of the new system include:

• An updated interface where users can explore data from 75+ layers such as parcel information, RDKB bylaw layers, floodplain information and reference layers from the province;

• Weekly updates to the ParcelMap BC (PMBC) parcel fabric. PMBC is the current, complete, and trusted mapped representation of titled and Crown land parcels;

• Mobile and tablet compatibility with the ability to enable GPS;

• Easy navigation across the entire regional district using predefined bookmarks;

• Tools which allow users to create reports and print outs, measure distances and areas, convert coordinates and add sketches;

• The ability to add data from other sources such as B.C.’s data catalogue;

• Extensive base map options to choose from including satellite imagery.
