Greater Trail towns roll into EV purchases with Trust grant

Over $2 million in funding

Columbia Basin Trust (Trust) is funding 17 key projects across the Basin to help towns and cities purchase electric vehicles and improve energy performance, thereby lowering emissions and reducing operating costs.

“Through these projects, communities are switching to renewable sources of energy, becoming more energy efficient by better-insulating buildings, and driving electric vehicles instead of burning fossil fuel,” said Ulli Mueller, Trust senior manager, delivery of benefits. “We are pleased to help communities take action on climate change.”

From the $2 million grant stream, the City of Trail is receiving almost $94,000 to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) and charging station.

Also receiving money for EV purchases and more are: Montrose, $96,300 to purchase an EV and complete energy upgrades to the community hall and village office; Fruitvale, $106,125 to install solar on the Beaver Valley childcare centre, complete village office energy upgrades, and to purchase an EV and install public use charging stations; and Salmo, $78,600 to install solar and complete energy upgrades to the village office and public works building.

Elsewhere in the West Kootenay: Silverton will use $299,000 to install solar to its municipal complex, complete energy upgrades at the memorial hall and village office, and purchase an EV and charging stations; Nakusp, $76,000 to purchase an EV and install public use charging stations; New Denver, $20,700 to complete energy efficiency upgrades on the sun hall; Nelson, $70,000 to buy an EV; and Kaslo, $170,000 to purchase an EV and complete energy efficient upgrades on the Kemball Memorial Centre.

Over the pass and into Creston, the Central Kootenay regional district will use $143,000 to install solar on the community complex and purchase an EV and charging system, and the Town of Creston will invest close to $103,000 to install solar on the emergency services building and purchase an EV and two charging stations.
