April 16 to April 22 is recognized across the province as Prevention of Violence Against Women Week.

This dedicated acknowledgment gives front line agencies the opportunity to amplify the message: there is no future for violence against women.

Another message from advocates and front line services focuses on the vital importance for survivors of violence to connect with the most appropriate services, resources and supports, to help them successfully leave their potentially life-threatening situation behind; and to recover from the very real and damaging impact of cohersive control and physical violence.

From Rossland to Trail and the Beaver Valley, RCMP Victim Services provides support and crisis response with a program to help make connections that best suit the needs of the woman.

“You don’t need police involvement to get emotional or practical support and information from us,” explains Jenn Penney, program manager, Trail and Greater District RCMP Victim Services. “No matter how severe the crime, traumatic incident, or tragedy, we provide the assistance you need to prevent further trauma.”

The RCMP also work closely with the Trail Family and Individual Resource (FAIR) Society, particularly the society’s Community Based Victim Services.

Penney adds, “We also make sure that you understand your rights as a victim, provide information on how the criminal justice system works, offer support throughout the court process, and connect you with the financial supports available to you as a victim of crime.”

Coming up Thursday, May 2, is the annual Clothesline Project, designed to raise awareness about violence against women.

The community is invited to join the Trail Area Violence Against Women in Relationships (VAWIR) Inter-Agency Committee May 2 outside Trail Ferraro Foods for a free barbeque lunch and to take in a display of t-shirts, created to raise awareness about gender violence. As well, there will be agency resource tables set up for visitors to view, gather information, and ask questions.
