Rossland’s Wildfire Hazard Cleanup Day activities organized by the FireSmart Neighbourhoods Program welcomed a good response from the Red Mountain community.

Despite the cold weather and with snow falling, Rossland’s Red Mountain neighbourhood residents came out to work together at reducing the wildfire hazard surrounding their homes.

Trees close to homes were pruned by an arborist before the cleanup day with residents moving the cut branches and vegetative debris to piles for pickup by City of Rossland crews.

“We have an enthusiastic group of neighbours here and it’s amazing what 20 folks working for an hour and a half can get done,” said Mike Sloan, Red Mountain FireSmart Neighbourhood champion. “We moved all of the branches and debris into piles for pickup and even had time for coffee, treats and a little socializing.

“It’s really a fun event and it makes a big difference to our wildfire hazard - we’ve been doing this for a few years now and the neighbourhood is looking better and becoming more FireSmart every year.”
