A fire that closed the Creston Landfill has been put out.
The Regional District of Central Kootenay said in a statement Friday afternoon the fire that began at approximately 5 a.m. had been extinguished, and that the landfill would reopen Saturday, June 11.
The regional district said lightning the previous evening may have been the cause of the fire, which is now being investigated.
The fire started at the back of the waste transfer station and moved to the scrap metal and appliances section. An air quality advisory was issued and residents were advised to stay away due to the potential for toxic fumes.
