May Speaker Series with Ron Verzuh: Printer’s Devils

Join historian Ron Verzuh at the museum at 6 p.m., Thursday, May 25 to hear all about his latest publication: Printer’s Devils: The Feisty Pioneer Newspaper That Shaped the History of British Columbia’s Smelter City, 1895-1925.

Journey back in time to the bygone era of “printer’s devils” –as the apprentices in a printing establishment were often called – and uncover how their influence shaped the establishment of B.C.’s Smelter City.

This captivating book traces the stories of Trail residents and their evolving attitudes, pastimes, and opinions as they respond in times of economic crisis, war, labour strife and life-threatening disease.

The talk at the museum will highlight sections of Verzah’s book that are particularly relevant to our region including Billy Esling (long-standing MLA and MP for the area, who started out as a “printer’s devil” at the Trail News), founding of the Le Roi Mine, Eber C. Smith (local editor-owner who got himself in hot water at one time!), and F. Augustus Heinze (once owner of the Rossland Miner).

Entry is by donation. Coffee, tea, and treats will be available. More info/RSVP at rosslandmuseum.ca/news/ron-verzuh-2023

Rossland Recollections with Ron Dennett

Join long-time volunteer Ron Dennett will be at the museum at 1 p.m., Wednesday, May 31 for a special, repeat presentation about the Murphy Creek Headwaters Plane Crash.

On Oct. 18, 1947, a Royal Canadian Air Force plane carrying nine people – seven RCAF crew members and two civilians – crashed near Mount Plewman in the Rossland Range.

There were no survivors. Five years later, in October 1952, Wilf Gibbard came across the remnants of the plane. Much of the story of that fateful flight remains a mystery.

Ron Dennett, pilot and RMDC volunteer and researcher, has been digging into this story for many years.

Come to the museum to hear his presentation about this tragic crash and the discovery of the wreckage.

Admission by donation. Treats/refreshments provided.
