Construction crews in Rossland did not hit mine shaft

The city responded to rumours that construction crews on Columbia Avenue had hit a mineshaft this week while excavating.

Mayor Greg Granstrom said Copcan crews encountered a void while removing blasted rock from the trench this week.

"Of course, the initial thoughts, being we are in Rossland, was "mine shaft,'" Granstrom said. "It wasn't a mine shaft, it was an opening no doubt, and maybe someone was digging around tunnelling in 1820, I don't know, but it was no shaft."

Geo-technical engineers assessed the void and determined that filling it with five cubic metres of concrete would mitigate any risks associated with it.
