Conservation grant program continues

The Waneta Expansion Project is slated for completion in 2015, but the economic effects have already been felt by many in Greater Trail.

The $900 million Waneta Expansion Project, which began in 2010, is a little over half-way through it’s projected time frame for completion in 2015 and the economic effects of the massive construction project have been felt by many in the Greater Trail area.

The Columbia Power Corporation, which manages the project on behalf of its partners, has announced that it will, once again, be sponsoring the environmental enhancement grant program initiated last year.

A $50,000 grant is available through the project’s Waneta Terrestrial Compensation Program (WTCP) and applications for the funding are available until Jan. 31.

As part of the project commitment to stewardship of the waterways and surrounding land affected by the project, the partners, Fortis Inc., Columbia Power Corporation, and Columbia Basin Trust, initiated the grant program intended to fund projects that promote conservation and restoration through research, physical works, and other projects.

The type of projects that may be considered for the grant program include research, species inventories, educational programs, development of management plans, habitat creation, weed control, habitat protection, and land acquisition.
