City-wide spring cleanup in Rossland

Spring is in the air, but the first fragrances to freshen your nose won’t be cherry blossoms. To help clear the city of doggie nuggets and the flotsam and jetsam discarded by careless people over the winter, encased in snow until now, the city has organized a whole week of fun-filled and bag-filling activities for “Pitch-in Rossland!” starting on April 16 and running until April 24.

The action gets down and dirty, beginning with the third annual “Doggie DooWaaWaa” to clean up both Centennial Trail and the Railgrade.

“I certainly expect to see the mayor and Duncan out there,” said co-organizer Coun. Kathy Moore — Greg Granstrom frequently walks his dog on Centennial, but claims he picks up more than Duncan’s share.

Meet at the Centennial trailhead at 9 a.m. on April 16 and at the Railgrade trailhead at 9 a.m. on April 17. Bring your preferred pooper scooper and gloves, although some gloves will be available, donated by local medical professionals. Bags will also be provided.

Every year across Canada, millions volunteer in some 19,000 municipal Pitch-In projects that encourage people to take pride in their community and to support programs to reduce, reuse, recycle, and properly dispose of waste.

It’s elementary: MacLean students are picking up trash and recyclables straight off the streets on April 21.

“My kids at school are preparing [Pitch-in] posters,” said co-organizer Coun. Jill Spearn, a teacher at MacLean.

Whatever else happens is up to you, organizers said. “If people have ideas about whatever else they’d like to do,” Moore said, “go for it!”

Hatch your own plan and get some friends together for your own clean up project: Sweep a sidewalk, detrash around your home or store, tidy up a dumpster or alley,

and then send some photos and the story to kathmoore27@gmail.com (362-3319) or jspearn@telus.net (362-5367).

Spearn said, “I hope everyone pitches in!”
