Rossland city council has recommended that the Regional District Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) distribute $52,000 in Columbia Basin Trust grants towards more than 30 projects in the region.
If approved, Mayor Kathy Moore said the grants would cover a wide variety of community projects.
They include $2,500 to the BC SPCA West Kootenay and district branch for their cat spaying project, $2,860 to the Bee Awareness Society to help them preserve and teach the public about bees and $2,500 to the Black Jack Ski Club to help them with their school programs for children. The latter helps to provide ski equipment for kids who come up for school lessons, Moore said.
A $1,000 grant was also recommended for the Friends of the Rossland Range Society to help construct two additional cabins in the backcountry. Both cabins would have a wood stove and be meant for day-use only.
The society said the cabins would also help to support search and rescue activities in the backcountry.
Council recommended against giving a grant to the Rossland Fall Fair core group, particularly because the city’s fall fair was cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 crisis.
The funding for the projects comes from the Columbia Basin Trust’s community initiatives grant program.
RDKB board directors will decide whether to approve the grants at a meeting later this month.
