Argenta and Slocan are no longer on evacuation alert after nearly a month of a massive wildfires endangering both communities.
The Regional District of Central Kootenay announced April 21 that it was rescinding the alert on a recommendation from BC Wildfire Service. The change impacts 174 properties and 44 parcel identifiers in Argenta and Johnsons Landing that were located close to the Argenta Creek wildfire, which has grown to 19,153 hectares since being discovered July 18 following a lightning storm that led to fires throughout the West Kootenay.
Argenta and Johnsons Landing were evacuated on July 25, but had those evac orders downgraded to alerts in the first week of August.
One property on Glacier Creek forest service road remains under an evacuation order, and Glacier Creek Regional Park has also been closed to the public.
The RDCK also said the Village of Slocan and a portion of the surrounding area east of the Slocan River, west of Highway 6 and south to Lemon Creek had its evacuation alert rescinded. That alert included 208 properties in Slocan as well as 155 properties and 58 parcel identifiers. Slocan's boil water advisory remains active.
One properties and five parcel identifiers on the west side of Slocan Lake were also downgraded from evacuation order to alert.
An evac order remains in place for three parcel identifiers on the west side of Slocan Lake, while 225 addresses and 131 parcels remain on alert.
The area was evacuated July 28 for its proximity to four major fires at Nemo Creek, Komonko Creek, Mulvey Creek and Ponderosa. Slocan's evac order ended Aug. 12.
