The Trail and Greater District RCMP remind everyone to safeguard their holiday deliveries this Christmas season.
After all, nothing puts a damper on holiday cheer quite like a stolen package.
While reported thefts in the Trail area are low at the moment, a little prevention goes a long way.
Here are some tips to help keep your packages secure:
• Change the delivery destination: Have packages sent to your workplace or a trusted neighbour who can receive them directly. No porch, no problem.
• Hide it or lock it: Ask couriers to place packages out of sight or use a locking container near your door. Out of sight is out of mind for most thieves.
• Go high-tech: Some delivery services can leave packages inside your home or garage if you provide access. Smart locks make this a modern, and surprisingly convenient, option.
• Opt for secure alternatives: Use companies that offer lockboxes or in-store pickup to eliminate the porch risk altogether.
• Stay on top of it: Track your deliveries using apps and bring them inside promptly. The less time a package sits outside, the better.
• Smile, you’re on camera: Surveillance cameras and video doorbells can deter theft and help identify culprits. Just remember, masked thieves or poor camera angles can limit their effectiveness.
Hopefully these tips will help keep the Grinch away from your doorstep this season.
Sgt. Mike Wicentowich sums it up best: “We would like to everyone have a happy holiday and get all of their presents.”
