Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the southern East Kootenay, including Cranbrook and the Elk Valley on Tuesday, Aug. 6.
According to Environment Canada, current conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.
If large hail should develop, it has the potential to damage property and even cause bodily harm. Heavy downpours have the potential to cause flash floods and pooling water on roadways. Environment Canada advises residents to stay indoors if lightning develops.
The thunderstorm watch includes Kimberley, Cranbrook and Fernie and extends west to include Creston, Nelson, Castlegar and Trail.
