Pacific Coastal Airlines, the carrier at Trail Regional Airport (YZZ), announced this week that it will introduce a larger aircraft, the Saab 340B, on all flights starting next month.
Additionally, the airline will offer an extra flight on two Saturdays in December as part of its winter 2024/2025 schedule, aimed at providing increased convenience and flexibility for travellers across British Columbia.
The new schedule will be in effect from Oct. 27 through April 26, 2025, with additional flights throughout B.C., including Trail, during the peak Christmas travel period.
Passengers travelling to YZZ will benefit from the Saab’s seating capacity of up to 34, compared to 19 in the Beechcraft 1900D, and the added convenience of an onboard lavatory.
On Saturday, Dec. 21, and Saturday, Dec. 28, increased capacity will be available through aircraft gauge increases or additional flights for Trail, confirmed the airline.
“We are thrilled to welcome the expansion of Saab aircraft flying into Trail twice daily,” said Trail Coun. Thea Hanson. “This significant development enhances connectivity for our residents and businesses and directly aligns with the airport committee’s plan to be a self-sustaining airport, positioning the region as a key hub for commerce and tourism.”
Councillors Hanson and Paul Butler revived a committee dedicated to the airport last year.
The success of this initiative is a testament to their advocacy for YZZ and their collaboration with Pacific Coastal Airlines.
The city has always viewed Trail Regional Airport as a critical infrastructure asset that supports the wider Kootenay community in many ways, Butler added.
“Onward and upward.”
Pacific Coastal Airlines is a privately-owned regional airline based in British Columbia, operating from Vancouver International Airport’s South Terminal.
It currently serves YZZ and 17 other airports across the province.
“This winter, we are pleased to offer passengers enhanced travel options with new routes, additional flights, and more seats on our larger Saab 340B aircraft,” said Johnathan Richardson, Vice President of Customer and Commercial Services.
“Pacific Coastal Airlines will provide 8,655 seats across 359 weekly flights to 18 communities throughout British Columbia during our winter schedule.”
The Trail and District Chamber of Commerce will host Pacific Coastal Airlines at its Oct. 3 Business to Business event at the Trail airport, Butler said, adding that Richardson and Shawn Warneboldt, Senior Manager of Business Development and Commercial Services, are scheduled to attend.
