Trail United Church officially turns 100 years on Sept. 22, 2025, born from the union of Trail’s Presbyterian and Methodist congregations.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the United Church of Canada, the Communities in Faith Pastoral Charge is hosting a special celebration at the Birchbank picnic grounds on Saturday, June 21.

The event, titled “Potluck Picnic in the Park,” will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and promises an afternoon of fellowship, refreshments, and shared memories in honour of the centennial milestone.

The United Church has long held a presence in Trail and the surrounding area, offering a place of worship, support, and connection for generations.

For longtime member Patsy Harmston, who was baptized in the church and has been active in the congregation for the past 30 years, the spirit of the United Church is deeply rooted in compassion, openness, and acceptance.

“Trying to put it into words,” she said, “just what a caring community the United Church is. For each other and the community. It’s openness and acceptance.”

Guests attending the picnic are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, though seating is optional.

Everyone is asked to contribute a potluck dish to share; paper plates and cutlery will be provided.

In addition to food and fellowship, the church is welcoming historical memorabilia or artifacts tied to the congregation’s long history.

Items such as photos, books, awards or other keepsakes can be brought to the picnic or dropped off at the church office ahead of time.

The Communities in Faith Pastoral Charge hopes the gathering will be a meaningful way to reflect on a century of faith, service, and community connection.

Services typically draw between 35 and 45 congregation members, with ministry led by Community Spiritual Companion Sue Breisch, who is currently on leave.

(Note: The event is on Saturday, June 21, not Friday as erroneously reported)
