Updated May 19 at 2:30 p.m.

Canada Post has received strike notices from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) for both Urban and Rural and Suburban Mail Carrier (RSMC) bargaining units.

According to the corporation’s May 19 statement, CUPW intends to begin strike activity at midnight local time on Friday, May 23.

Operations are continuing as usual for now.

However, in the event of rotating strikes or a national labour disruption, customers — including subscribers of the Trail Times — should expect potential delivery delays.

In the case of missed deliveries due to a postal strike, the Trail Times will automatically apply a credit to subscribers’ accounts for any undelivered issues.

Local subscribers are welcome to pick up their paper in person every Thursday at the Trail Times office, located at 1163 Cedar Ave.

“We want to ensure our readers continue to have access to their local news,” said a spokesperson for the Trail Times. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this period of uncertainty.”

Subscribers with a newspaper carrier are not affected.

Labour disruption

Canada Post warns that a disruption would impact millions of Canadians and further strain the corporation’s already challenging financial position. Since 2018, Canada Post has reported over $3 billion in pre-tax losses, and another significant loss is expected for 2024.

In early 2025, the Government of Canada announced up to $1.034 billion in repayable funding to help the Crown corporation avoid insolvency.

If CUPW initiates strike activity, Canada Post plans to continue operations in unaffected areas, but mail and parcels will not be accepted or delivered during a national disruption. All items currently in the network will be secured and delivered once operations resume.

Canada Post has confirmed that socio-economic cheques (SECs) for May will be delivered prior to any strike.

They will also continue delivering SECs and live animal shipments under specific agreements during a disruption, though no new live animal shipments will be accepted in affected regions.
