Sailing competitions are usually something reserved for the coast and larger lakes, but one is coming to Jewel Lake next month.
The Jewel Lake Trailer Sailor Regatta is planned for Aug. 16 to Aug. 18, with room for 10 trailerable swing keel yachts up to a maximum of 26 feet, 10 dinghies and 10 catamarans.
“Jewel Lake is a wonderful little mountain lake known for its great fishing, clear spring fed waters and warm swimming waters come mid summer,” says organizer Oliver Glaser. “It’s less known for its great sailing, but the sailing is great.”
“Having sailed with family and friends on the lake in various sized boats from dinghies to small yachts for 10 years, I can attest to the wonderful sailing here on the lake.”
The regatta is focused on growing the regional sailing community and connecting local sailors.
Glaser says he and others attempted to hold a regatta last summer, but wildfires forced its cancellation.
The plan so far is to have boats and crews arrive by Friday afternoon (Aug. 16) for a meet and greet, which will give guests time for practice sails.
Saturday will be for official races and an evening BBQ. Sunday morning will see more races and the awards ceremony in the afternoon.
“Sign-up for crewing will be available for those who have some sailing experience and want to join on boats that might be in need of a couple of crew members,” Glaser notes.
Spectators are welcome, with viewing from the shore or from small boats outside of the sail course.
“What makes Jewel Lake such a sailing paradise is the geography,” Glaser explains.
“Predominant winds from the north and south go up and down the lake, as well as the winds coming down off the neighbouring mountain tops, making it a fun, fast and extremely technical lake to sail.
“It’s been a great learning ground for my two kids who sail with me and on their own boats, as well as myself at the lake throughout the summers here.”
