Hello Baby, a one-man comedy that examines the procreative process from the male perspective, will be playing at the Miners’ Hall at 8 p.m. on March 5.
Intended expressly for dads, people who are going to be dads, have a dad, or know a dad, the “instructional lecture” written and performed by first-time, semi-competent father Lucas Myers, answers such essential questions as, “Is your life as you know it really over?”
Myers’ concept began after the birth of his first child four years ago. “There’s a lot of support and info for the expectant mother — understandably, she does a lot of work — but there’s not much for the father,” he said.
“There’s a lot going on, you’re going to be responsible for a human being. There’s definitely a transition.”
To help fathers through this transition, the evening covers topics such as nicknames for nipples and tips and tricks such as the trusty “nod and smile.”
It’s all set to upbeat original tunes on ukulele, guitar, and miniature guitar such as “Nobody Warned Me Bout the Drool.”
“Everywhere everyone gets a big kick out of the show,” Myers said, “It’s a blast.”
Myers was born and raised in Nelson, spending two summers with the Gold Fever Follies in Rossland when he was 16 and 17 years old.
“They worked us pretty hard,” he recalled. “The first summer they wanted us to go out and do street theatre in a three piece woollen suit in mid-summer in the middle of the day. I think we did it three times and then rebelled!”
He moved to Victoria for a BFA at UVic and then moved to Montreal to attend the National Theatre School.
He’s toured right across Canada and internationally — earning “Myers is brilliant,” from the Globe and Mail — but he returned to Nelson to have a family.
“I knew if I ever had a kid, this is where I’d want to raise it,” he said. Now with two children, he’s making it as a gigging actor and playwright, but one man shows are his favourite.
“I can express myself and talk about the things that I’m interested in. And people seem to enjoy them.”
Rossland is the last stop on his Columbia Basin tour which has included Golden, Cranbrook, Kimberley, Fernie, Revelstoke. This is the second tour of Hello Baby since last year’s shows in Nelson, Kaslo, and Ymir.
Tickets, $10, are available from Out of the Cellar in Rossland or from the Charles Bailey Box Office at 1-866-368-9669.
