Far From Botany Bay

Rosa Jordan, 2008

Available in hard copy at the Rossland Library

I absolutely loved this historical novel that is based on the true story of a young woman who was sent sent to Australia’s prison colony in 1789. To avoid starvation, she escapes and navigates the Southern ocean in a small boat, with her two small children, only to be sent to a Dutch jail. A fascinating story, an indomitable character, well revealed by the Rossland author.

What’s Left Behind

Gail Bowen, 2016

Available in hard copy at the Rossland Library

Another of fifteen mysteries featuring Joanne Kilbourne as sleuth and narrator. This whodunnit takes place in Regina, Saskatchewan amid a fiercely contested referendum pitting the principal characters against ruthless developers. Multiple murders and multiple suspects will keep you guessing until the very end. Nicely written with a Canadian feel and a sense of the prairies.

No Return Ticket

Captain Skip Rowland, 2016

Available in hard copy at the Rossland Library

A classic sailing yarn, complete with terrifying storms and tropical island delights, this personal narrative is an enjoyable read. Local mariner and author Skip Rowland writes honestly about the struggles in his journey from California to Tahiti, by far surpassed by many beautiful moments, almost enough to make me reconsider my vow to never leave sight of land.

I definitely plan to read about Part Two of Skip’s journey in his following book.

Let My People Go Surfing

Yvon Chouinard, 2016

Soon available as an E-book through BC Library Interconnect

Subtitled “The education of a reluctant businessman” this is not your average business read, as Patagonia is not your average sporting goods company. It’s interesting reading- the biography of a passionate athlete, the history of the company, and most of all, a call to both citizens and business to take vitally needed steps to preserve our planet. Chouinard makes a convincing case for all us to reconsider our consumer lifestyle and buy less of his companies product.
