Rosslanders interested in the future of recreation services in the city should take part in an open house this afternoon.
The City of Rossland is conducting a public input process to gather information from the community on their needs and wants regarding recreation and culture in the community.
As a few key recreational assets are aging and in need of major capital investment, the City has taken the opportunity to ensure the future plan for recreation and recreation facilities aligns with the current demographics of the community and their sports/activities of choice.
“I am looking forward to hearing from the community about recreation,” said Mayor Kathy Moore. “Rossland provides a lot of recreational opportunities for our residents and visitors but it’s been 10 years since we really sought input on the subject.”
Moore says the demographics of the town have changed and the City wants to offer the facilities that people want.
“This public engagement process will give everyone a chance to consider what is important to them about recreation and how much they are able and willing to pay for it through taxes,” she said.
The City has hired MODUS, a public engagement firm from Vancouver, for assistance in the process. Its job is to ensure everyone in the community has the opportunity to have their voice heard. The engagement process will include an online survey and in-person public input session.
Both tools are designed to gather information about what activities people participate in, what facilities they use and how they would prioritize both capital and operational spending.
Specific questions are asked regarding the Rossland Pool and Rossland Arena, as both facilities are facing large capital needs to continue operating in the future.
There are also specific questions on whether residents would like Rossland City Council to re-consider negotiations with the City of Trail regarding the dual pricing policy.
The Public event will take place on Wednesday, September 12th from 3-7pm at the Miners’ Hall.
It will be a drop-in event, so people can come at a time convenient for them and voice their opinion.
