In response to the calamity in Japan, Rosslander David McCarthy has teamed up with Byron Whitlaw of AreaOne Events to co-organize a non-profit Japan Disaster Relief Fundraiser at the Miners’ Hall on Thursday, March 31, with all proceeds directed to Red Cross relief efforts.

Highly acclaimed musician Shane Philip will headline as a unique one-man-band on didgeridoo, guitar, and drums with bare-footed vocals. Ranging from cool and flowing to fiery and upbeat, his earthy tones have earned glowing reviews across the country.

A local act, The Baked Goods, will open the stage, and a silent auction from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. will include donations from local artists and stores.

With more than 9,000 known dead and some 12,000 people still missing, Japan faces a long road to recovery. Hundreds of powerful aftershocks took their toll on March 11 after one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded, followed by a deadly tsunami that swallowed homes, and swept away cars, boats, and people.

“Japan now needs our help more than ever,” McCarthy said, adding that they chose to support the Red Cross because it is a powerful symbol of neutrality, impartiality, humanity and hope.

The Red Cross is working to supply many relief items to affected Japanese populations, such as family blankets, sleeping mats, hygiene items, and medical supplies and equipment. The Red Cross is also deploying emergency personnel.

For those unable to attend the show, donations to the Red Cross effort can be made at www.redcross.ca, your bank or at Drift Izakaya.

Tickets, $25, are on sale now at Rossvegas Boardshop, Drift Izakaya, and Clancey’s Coffee.
