Being just past May Day, or International Workers’ Day, here’s a great photo of the 1913 Miners Union Day celebrations in Rossland.
May Day commemorates the difficulties faced by workers of the world through labour movements.
According to historian Eric Hobsbawn, this tradition, which originates from the industrial revolution, took form by binding itself to ancient folkloric customs linked to spring festivals.
Rossland has had a long history of labour activity, including a long miner’s strike from 1901-02, which resulted in the introduction of some key labour legislation in B.C.
