The Rossland Royal Canada Legion is getting all spiffed up for Golden City Days.

The Legion is undergoing a renovation to its upstairs lounge and invites the public to celebrate its official reopening on Saturday, Sept. 9, following the Golden City Days parade at 12:30 p.m.

“The federal MP Richard Cannings is going to come and just say a few words. We’re going to have a ribbon cutting. We’ll have some snacks and stuff, and the bar will be open,” explains Joanne Drystek, Legion treasurer.

West Kootenay MLA Katrine Conroy and representatives from the Rossland City Council will also be in attendance.

The Rossland Legion received $14,340 from the Government of Canada’s new Horizons for Seniors Program.

“The Government of Canada is proud to support the Rossland Royal Canadian Legion Branch No 14 through the New Horizons for Seniors Program,” said the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development. “The Legion’s timely renovation project will enhance their lounge, making it more conducive to hosting dinners, dances and other popular seniors-related activities.”

The reno includes new carpeting, new lighting and fresh paint.

“It was in dire need of a fresh look,” says Drystek.

Volunteers have played a big role in the project.

“Lots of labour is all volunteer,” says Drystek. “All the dry walling, a lot of the electrical work, all the painting — everything like that has all been volunteer labour. So lots of assistance from the membership.”

The Rossland Legion (2081 Washington St.) will re-open on Wednesday, Sept. 6, ahead of the official reopening, after having been closed for the summer months of July and August.

The hall is available for rental if groups are interested. Call 250-362-5535.
